Virginia Forest Watch

PLEASE LET US KNOW ABOUT LOGGING JOBS!!

Please Let Us Know About Logging Jobs!

The Department of Forestry has sent the following letter out to Virginia loggers letting them know about the new Notification Law that we made happen. However, this does not necessarily mean that they will begin to notify! From the past two years we learned that only half of the jobs we turned in had notified. We want to continue to watch what is going on, to make sure loggers notify and DOF does their job. The data we gather will help Forest Watch justify its continuing effort to strengthen Virginia laws governing logging.

Please continue to send job notification to us at vafw@mounet.com or call 276-479-2176

Let us know:
1. Where the job is, with good directions to get there
2. If the job is active, if not, how old you think it is
3. Who is doing the logging (if you know)
4. Who's property it is on (if you know)
5. Any thing bad you see on this job

DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY

A Letter to Virginia's Loggers
Civil Penalty for Failure to Notify the State Forester of Commercial
Timber Harvesting Operations
Effective July 1, 2002

The 2002 session of Virginia's General Assembly made changes to the Silvicultural Water Quality Law, Code of Virginia #10.1-1181.2(H) related to Notification of the Commercial Harvesting of Timber. This change gives the State Forester the authority to issue a Civil Penalty of $250 for the initial violation and up to $1,000 for subsequent violations within a 24 month (2 year) period.

The Notification is required by the Operator (as defined in the law) and the Civil Penalty will be assessed against the Operator for failure to notify.

Notification must be received by the Virginia Department of Forestry within three days of the start of the logging operation, or before completion if the operation will take less than three days to finish.

The two best methods of contact will be by calling....................etc.

Please direct any questions to Matt Poirot, Water Resources Program Manager
